Jo had almost forgotten how safe she felt with Ash, but it all came rushing back as he leaned in. She tightened her grip on his hand. Her heart was racing. She shouldn’t be so nervous, she thought. She’d been here before. But the way he was looking at her, how slowly the space between them was closing…it felt like a first kiss. Maybe that was what they needed. Maybe Heaven had been too perfect. Maybe earth was what they needed…to really be themselves. After all, they’d never gotten to have this on earth before. As Ash brought his lips to hers, Jo forced herself to think of nothing but sensation. His warm, strong hand clasping hers, his sweet breath, soft lips, the little bit of stubble on his chin. She could do this. She could stay real for him.
Jo pressed herself closer to him until they were a tangle of arms and legs trying to stay upright on the flimsy bed. She unwound her fingers from his, closing them instead around his wrist, and she guided his hand to her breast. “Miles,” she said, her voice hoarse. She could feel herself starting to fade, but she fought it. She’d never had a better reason to stay solid. Pulling her face away from his, she met his eyes. “I want you.”
Jo sat down, deciding it wasn’t worth it to try and figure out why she had no trouble standing or sitting on solid objects instead of going through them. The mattress was stiff. She shifted, half out of discomfort, half out of nerves, and faced Ash.Their eyes met and that familiar trust was there, just like it had always been. Jo had always felt at ease with Ash, but now, like in heaven, there was a sort of giddiness she did not recognize - at least not in association with him. Still, it was there, and there wasn’t much she could do about it. She shook her head. It wasn’t like her to feel so shy, especially with someone with whom she’d already shared so much. But the longer she was down on earth, the hazier the memories of heaven became - like they’d all just been a really good dream, and now she was waking up.
She felt herself blushing again as she lifted her hand to Ash’s. Her fingers shook and something stirred deep in her chest, then lurched low in her abdomen. Rolling her eyes at herself, she redoubled her concentration. She thought about Ash’s hand: warm and strong and rough. She focused on it until there was nothing else in the world, until all she could think of was her fingers intertwined with his. He was like a statue, his hand patient, unmoving, waiting for hers. An inch closer, another, and - there. She let out a shuddering breath as she pressed her palm against his, grinning with satisfaction. Meeting his soft eyes, she said the only thing she could think of: “Hi.”
Something about Jo sitting next to him, her hand pressed up against his, made it so Ash couldn’t take his eyes away from hers even if he tried. He could feel her concentration and if he wasn’t mistaken, his heart was beating in overtime beneath his chest because of it. He was partly anxious to see if she could actually keep it there and partly anxious because it was Jo. His best friend, the one girl on Heaven and Earth who understood him and treated him better than anyone else. They had only been together for an hour or two since he had found her, but that feeling was just as strong as it had ever been. Maybe even stronger than before.
Ash was never one to let his emotions take control of him, but the touch of her skin against his was enough to make him realize what he had been looking for since they’d been apart. For those few months that he had been searching for her, he felt like a part of him was missing, a part that made him whole and without it, he was practically nothing. He had been so scared that if he didn’t find her, if she were really gone, then he would be forever missing that piece of him, that better half.
And now she was here. They were together again and he couldn’t take his eyes away from her. The little “Hi” made his lips curl upwards into a smile and he chuckled a soft “Hi” in return. His fingers tingled a little and he very gently squeezed to make sure she was keeping her focus. When she didn’t disappear or even flicker, Ash sighed and nodded slightly to himself.
“Okay.” He kept his eyes locked on hers. “We’re gonna try something a little harder now.” Was this even a good idea? She would most likely flash out of this plane and leave him sitting there looking silly, but it in the end, it would be worth it. It was worth it because it was Jo. And he knew now that the reason for everything he was feeling at this moment, in Heaven and even when they were still alive, the reason he was happy, was because he loved her.
Slowly leaning forward, Ash held onto her hand, closing the space between them. He could feel her uneven breathing and his eyes softly watching hers before they closed and he pressed his lips gently against hers. The warmth of her mouth on his made his heart beat heavier than ever before as he prayed she wouldn’t disappear and they could stay like this just a little longer.
I’m gonna make you regret that.
Just a kiss?
